Immunization Requirements

Rotating starRotating starImmunization Requirements for all Kansas schools will be changing effective 2009-2010 school year.

There are 3 significant changes in the state requirements for the next school year.  The following additional requirements will be added to the current requirements starting in the Fall of 2009:

Hepatitis B: three doses will be required through 9th grade.

Varicella (chickenpox): one dose will be required for 1st through 9th grades unless the student has had chickenpox.  Documentation of the illness will be required from a physician.  Two doses are required for Kindergarteners and are recommended for all ages.  Beginning in the fall of 2010, two doses of varicella vaccine will be required for all students K – 12.

Tetanus:  Beginning next fall, any secondary students needing their tetanus booster MUST receive the Tdap vaccine as TD will no longer be accepted.  Please be sure the doctor specifies what he has given  and does not just write Tetanus or TD booster.  The booster must contain the pertussis vaccine (the “p” in Tdap) in order to fulfill the state requirements.  This is due to the increase of pertussis (whooping cough) in our older children (11 years and up) since that part of the vaccine wears off at about 11 years of age.  This puts the infants in our society that are not yet fully immunized at greater risk.

For those of you with elementary-aged students, they will need to receive their Tdap booster for tetanus at 11 years of age and again, TD will no longer be accepted.
