SUMS Bags
This year your 3rd grader will be participating in a fun new way to practice their math facts and learn new math strategies. The Cedar Creek third grade teachers wrote a grant for math materials to send home for students to share new strategies with their families on a weekly basis. We were allotted the money at the end of 2005 and will be continuing this program starting today!
What is a S.U.M.S. bag?
Every Tuesday (with the exception of short weeks) your child will bring home a green S.U.M.S. bag containing a math activity or game to be practiced at home with a family member throughout the week. The bag will provide all the materials and directions to play the game or complete the activity.
When you and your child have completed the assignment, you will fill out a comment sheet explaining your experience with the activity. The bag will need to come back to school on Tuesday. Your child is responsible for all the materials (including the bag) that are in their possession when they leave the building. If something is lost or damaged, you and your child will be responsible for replacing those materials.
*Our goal is to create a solid home-school connection in the area of math. When students participate in a hands-on manner and have the ability to teach someone else what they are learning, their retention level is higher and their confidence grows.
